How do you get more colors in a gradient map? A 6-color gradient only seems to come out with 2 or three colors in the mapping.

the problem is that the filter has not setting or preview:

it use all the gradient colors but if is simple guess what should happen with a 2 color gradient, i found much harder guess the result for gradients with more colors:

Basically the filter use the color at the extreme left to color the darkest pixel of the original and that to the right for the brighest...and the others for the rest with same logic

With a preview and a something to offset or modify the chosen gradient (something similar to the gradient editor..or more simply to just offset the gradient) will become much more flexible

As it is now i prefer use only with 2 color gradient, because at least i may (more or less ) imagine the result
:
So...If you see only 2 colors should be because in the image are missed the tones that for intensity will correspond to the other colors of the gradient, but again that seems impossible to handle without a preview

But is one of those old filter never revitalized, still works but without a dialog miss flexibility, will be nice if some developer would find the time to improve those old filters

I see what you mean.

I found a pattern that had a distinct, black, gray, and white pattern and the gradient map was able to discern the 3 different shades and used a 3-color gradient. That's an annoying problem with the mapping.

Thanks for the info.

You got the point
Suppose you had a 4 color gradient there..no way to know which one of the other 2 color would be used for the grey

Also because the "map" is not done in base of the luminosity of the image but on base of "colour intensiyty" that i believe correspond to the luminosity only for the 2 extreems (darkest and lighest pixels)

Again possible solution i may imagine are for developer not end user...a preview and something allowing to interactively modify (at least to offset )the chosen gradient
