Create from web page

GIMP Version: 2.8.20
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: Mint Serena (under Ubuntu 16.04)
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

Hi there buddies! I am currently learning GIMP from a book, it covers the basics. The problem is that when it talks about all the different ways to create a new file from the file>create menu, specifically "create from web page", well... i don't have such option! I've been looking around and cannot seem to find an explanation for this, I have also added Otto's repo to my system and installed version 2.8.20 but the option is still missing. :roll:

Never noticed that before, not a function that I use, but it is not there in my Kubuntu 16.04 Gimp 2.8.20 either. Looks like it has been missed out because...

If you really-really need that then it is there in the Gimp 2.9.5 from

But since you are just starting Gimp, advise to stick with Gimp 2.8.20

Create > From WebPage is something I haven't tried before. Just tried it now for the first time.

i'm on Windows 7; Gimp 2.8.18.
The function is there, but I get the following error:
Execution error for 'From Webpage':
TLS/SSL support not available; install glib-networking

I'm not going to try to get it working.

GIMP 2.8.20

Seems to work fine with most secure and non-secure web pages. Certain pages such as gimp.org give an error message. Nice to know this feature is there, now I need to find a use for it. :hehe

As with most of Gimp, it is a plugin.

In linux in the usual place usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/ Two files, web-browser and web-page. Some versions have both, some only web-browser. Example Ubuntu Gimp 2.8.20 only the one, PCLinuxOS Gimp 2.8.20 both.

Why? I do not know.

I usually dump web pages to pdf, but If you ever need a browser graphic capture extension I can recommend Nimbus.
