layer modes, creating new?

GIMP Experience: New User

the "mode" which defaults to "normal" for blending layers..

Can new modes be created?

No. There will be additional modes in Gimp 2.10, but so far they didn't open this to plugins. One of the problem is that the mode is saved with the XCF. And what happens if you share an XCF with someone who hasn't got the plugin?

Note that "layer groups" are the blending equivalent of parentheses in formulas, so you can get quite creative by combining blending modes.

Sometime it's not just a matrix (see "Dissolve")
