Update my gimp 2.8.14 to 2.8.22

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Experienced User

Hi,

I want to get the latest version 2.8.22 but need to know how I should do it. You see I have a bunch of shortcuts and scripts and a good theme that I like and it's all set up the way I like it. But if I upgrade how should I do it.

Would I delete the old version first.

Can I just put in the menurc file to get the shortcuts.

Will the theme (AeroIon) work the same.

Would I have to make all new gradients and curve presets.

Or would everything just sort of carry over to the new version.

You can delete the old version first and then install the newest version without losing scripts/plugins etc.

Make first a backup before installing if its not good you can always go back to the previous state.

I will create a restore point via windows.

So if I just download and install the newer version of gimp will it just automatically use all the same settings?

Or should I uninstall first?

You should make a copy of your present Gimp User Folder.
It's usually located @,
C:\Users\Your Username\.gimp-2.8.
Put the copy in a safe place,
for access later.

Uninstall Gimp.

Install the new version of Gimp.

Launch the new Gimp installation.

Note:
By launching the new Gimp installation.
A new Gimp User Folder will be created,
at the location mentioned above.

Cloes Gimp.

Go to the location,
where you earlier saved the old Gimp User Folder.

Copy the saved Gimp User Folder.

Replace the Newly created Gimp User Folder,
with the old saved copy.

Thanks Wallace, that's what I need - step by step info.

I created a restore point, copied the user folder to another folder, uninstalled gimp and then downloaded and installed gimp 2.8.22.

I don't know why but I didn't have to move the user folder back. It just works with all the same settings automatically after isntalling.

This newer version of gimp 2.8.22 is nice because when I use a script that opens a dialog box I don't have to go to the task view button by windows start menu and click it to access it any more. That's what I was hoping would happen.

Normally a new install of GIMP-2.8 will just use the same user/.gimp-2.8/ directory of resources including existing user rc files. But it is better to be safe than sorry later.
