So I want to make a bunch of custom stamps/brushes. I found tutorials on how to make a custom brush and managed to make one.

My question: is there a way to turn each layer into a single independent brush on in the same file. Or am I suck making a file for each and every image I want to make into a brush?

Animated brushes have multiple images per file. They give random or sequential images when used.

Single image brushes are one file per image.

If you would like to turn each layer into a seperate brush a good idea would be to install GAP, once it's installed simply click - "Video" - from the GIMP menu, then from the drop-down menu click - "Split Image to Frames" - and specify .gbr extension for a gimp brush file, and they will all be written separately to a disk file for you.

Apart from the 'animated' .gih brush there is no equivalent to a PS .abr 'brush set'

What you can do is collect similar brushes and place in a sub-folder under brushes in the Gimp profile.

This one for example an 'arrows' sub-folder. That allows you to sort (and isolate) that set of brushes. They are automatically tagged with the folder name



Once you have a few of those, then think about using a resources manager that allows moving sets of brushes in and out of Gimp as required.
