Hi all, I'm trying to cut off the bottom of this ebook cover, move the photo down then write a book title on my signature background colour at the top, and a shorter one at the bottom and I can't work out how to do that!

I can only find tutorials that show how to cut shapes out.

Please help!

Very straight forward:



1. Add a new transparent layer
2. Use the rectangular selection to define an area
3. Fill with colour and repeat for second block



4. Using the move tool, select the picture layer and shift it down.

Recommendation, click in the canvas to set the move tool but use the keyboard down arrow to move (slowly) down. Otherwise maybe set some edge guides and click-drag. Always a chance using click-drag to move off to the side.

5. You can leave the 'outside of canvas' it does not do any harm but if you want to remove it go
Layer -> Layer to image size.



6. Add your text at the top of the stack

Excellent Rich!! That is excellent and really easy to follow, except I haven't got the little rectangles, you know where you get one on top of another & you can click on them to bucket fill a space.

I think you mentioned it last time but saw it lurking somewhere but now I can't see it at all! Where can I find it please?

Those are done with the Rectangle Select Tool. The one in the top left of the tool box. (No 2 in Rich's first image)

First make the selection, then bucket fill with colour.

Hi Blighty, that is great, I've found that one, but its the two rectangles almost on top of each other where you can click to change colours I'm missing. I've found the rectangle you can pull to section off a part.
I have a section ready to bucketful, but not the squares you use to choose the colour

Windows > Dockable Dialogues > Colours

It could be that sometime you disabled the tool.

Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Toolbox

Right at the top is a tickbox for Show foreground & background colour

I've done it!! I'm just so grateful for all your help, I wish I could give you a huge hug in thanks!! I moved the image down really easily and made it black & white, I just need to make it paler and add text. I've also clicked save to keep what I have so far, but I still have the marching ants around the bottom rectangle, do they matter? And do I just click the text thingie to write on it?

That is a selection, better if it is removed. Use Selection -> None



Best if you first make sure you are on the top-most layer, then any text will go above that.

Click the text tool then click on the canvas where you want the text to start. Type your text into the box on canvas. If it is not exactly in the correct place, switch to the move tool make sure you are on a part of the text and not the transparent bit around the text, click and move.
