Hi, I'm trying to make a poster using this image. I want to personalise it for a friend so need to change the text. Where it says 'COMING MIDNIGHTS' etc. What I've been doing is creating 3 new images to match the middle and the two sides. I've got the colour looking good, put a grid on and then added the text. When I add them as layers though it is obvious that it has been gimped, by someone that isn't a particularly good Gimper. (I assume it's okay to use Gimp as both a verb and a noun)

My question is... am I going about this correctly and just need to make it better, or is there another way of doing it?

What you are trying to do is not an easy job, in my opinion.
Firstly you need a matching font, then remove the existing text, possibly with the clone tool or even paint by sampling nearby colours like in this tutorial:

The billboard is a tough one because it has a lot of shades in it.

You could also try to make the new text out of the existing image, by copying und cutting individual letters out.
But that requires that you can find all the letters you'll need for the replacement text.

Its also possible to replace the whole billboard by something made in Gimp.
Then you could use any font, with a grid and possibly the perspective tool.
The shaded texture is still a tough one.

I've been playing with the image to remove the text with the clone tool and using Gaussian blur on small areas to try and make it look like the individual sections match. It's a task, but I'm playing with it for the fun of it.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going down the clone stamp tool route as it seems the simplest. I'm finding it quite relaxing, which is an added bonus.
