I am trying to 'mix' colors on my canvas (many of the photoshop painting tutorials show folk doing it, as yet I'm to find a description as to how), can i do this in Gimp, if so, can anyone tell me how please?

What do you mean "palette on my canvas" ?
There is something called a palette in Gimp that lets you pick up a collection of colors. Its called a swatch in PS.

Both Gimp and PS have Blendmodes and Opacity for Brushes but Photoshop also has "Flow" which represents how much "ink" comes from the brush, so that it builds the more you paint on the same spot.
Unlike Opacity which requires you to make a "new click".

I could be wrong, but I do think you will get far with Gimp 2.8 From memory (ArtRage?), there are applications which have a 'virtual artists palette' function.

One hurdle is the sRGB colorspace mode see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRGB

This produces that nasty dark border between colours. The development Gimp 2.9 introduces the linear colour space which corrects that problem.
Other than that, Gimp 2.9 has the mypaint brush engine, which helps, there are 'blend' type brushes.

I think if you want to use Gimp 2.8, you will need to use some other application in addition.

Thankyou for your replies Konstantin and rich2005. The photoshop flow feature was what had me stumped.
So rich, time to get my new machine out of it's box and install latest stable Gimp (I will probably wait while Christmas as it's an early present from me to me).
