Hi y'all! New here. I just recently updated to 2.10 and I'm having some issues. Currently I'm working on making a torn, old letter for a DnD game I run. So I created a parchment background, then added text, then merged the text layer down into a transparent layer, thinking I could then erase bits of the text. But when I use the erase tool all it does is make it look faded. I can work around it by using the select tool but I'd really like to know why it's doing that.

I've attached an image to show what I mean.

Are the layer and tool transparencies all set properly?

That was it! Somehow the transparency was set to 80% and I hadn't noticed. The new UI is really hard for me to use, everything kind of blends together in a grey mess.
