2.10 Issues

This is my third year using GIMP in my business. Here's how I use it:
I crop images created by unnamed artists from PDFs in a public domain database.
I import the cropped images into GIMP 2.10 as a layer.
I clean scanning noise up and straighten the images and compose them into my own art applying backgrounds, etc.
I print and sell my artwork providing a detailed explanation of my source and the process with each print.
I have experienced a very significant deterioration in the quality of the b&w images once imported as a layer into GIMP 2.10 when compared with work completed using all earlier versions of GIMP.

In your more knowledgeable experience compared to mine, could this be my imagination or just bad luck? Your thoughts and/or recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

Could you post a sample image? Then someone can try in both 2.8 and 2.10 to duplicate the problem. Also detail the steps you use.

I think it's your imagination.
But sample is needed, and more detailed description of your entire workflow.
Hard to say otherwise if it's the image that sucks or something else, there are many things to cater if you want a good print.
I don't understand why you would first crop image and then import it to Gimp, when you can do the whole process in Gimp.
Are they really scans or vector images? Just wondering because you mention they are pdf format.
If they are embedded greyscale images in a pdf document, then it will always depend on the quality of the image.
Usually images embedded in PDF document are heavily optimized and 72 or 96dpi.
If they are vectors, then prepare them using inkscape. All you need to do is to export the vector to png using 300 or 600dpi.
That'll give you big raster image to edit in Gimp.

Could well be greyscale PDF scans of old articles / magazines rather than text + image as a PDF.

AFAIK GIMP uses the poppler lib for PDF conversion to bitmap and 2.10 will have a more recent version of poppler.

You need to compare like-with-like. Open a pdf in Gimp 2.8 save as png, repeat with Gimp 2.10

Stack the images in Gimp and do a blink test, toggle visibility of the top layer on-off.
Can you see a difference? This one, no appreciable difference, although if you zoom right in the Gimp 2.8 image is marginally darker than the Gimp 2.10 image.

Good day...

I installed Gimp 2.10 . I looks good and runs great but. when I draw a line with any tool, I do not see the line until I release the mouse button. Also when using eraser tool, when try to create a transformation grid....

Is there a setting I need to change to stop this from happening?
I'm having this trouble at Windows7 32bits ... but this is not happening in another installation at Windows10 64bit ...i think it's a problem with 32bits version of GIMP

You are correct, there is a problem with the 32 bit side of Gimp 2.10.2 from gimp.org

Hopefully fixed when when Gimp 2.10.4 escapes is released.

There is a working portable 32 bit from samj https://samjcreations.blogspot.com/ about halfway down the page.

You might need to go straight into Edit -> Preferences and enable 'legacy' icons if they do not initially show (toolbox just dots)

Always remember.
If something in GIMP does not work, it is 99% probability, your fault.

My problem is with chained/unchained option such as if you want to resize a section. It works, but the chain/unchain setting never changes. Not a game changer but enjoying. Also same issue when you want to tile a texture. Hopefully, this gets addresses soon. I would submit a bugzilla, but I forgot the password and never received a reset email when I tried to get it retrieved.
