GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: 10
GIMP Experience: New User

I am trying to make a map for a fantasy setting. I am following a guide (for Photoshop).

I used Filters>Render>Noise>Difference Clouds. I then clicked on the image and it brought up a menu which I could edit the filter with, such as the strength and detail. I then used Colors>Threshold to make the image black and white. The guide creates a layer to apply this affect so that you can edit the clouds underneath, but this isn't available in GIMP. Therefore, I wanted to rerun the clouds again to try for another random image. I used CTRL+Z to remove the threshold, and then tried to click on the image to get to the edit menu where you could redo the filter's seed. However, it reapplied the threshold. I figured that GIMP considers that a tool I had selected but doesn't include it in the toolbar, so I wouldn't know. I searched the toolbar for an edit tool, but couldn't find one; just selection type tools. Now I can't edit any clouds I make, even in a new image. How do I get back to the edit tool?

I believe it is a Right-Click on the image/canvas,
which is needed to bring up this menu.

Or you would need to change the selected Tool,
by using the Tool Options dialog.

Select a different tool.
For instance,
select the Paint Brush Tool and try again.

I haven't tested this yet, but I remember that right click brings up the file, edit, etc options. Wouldn't clicking with the paint tool just paint?

I just tried this on a completely different computer running version 2.8, and it brings up this menu every time I use the clouds filter. How do I get my version to do that?

Just to be clear, this is a seperate window titled Solid Noise, and allows me to see and edit a preview.

Yes you're correct.

You would need to reopen the Differences Clouds filter again.

However,
changing the tool form within the tools dialog,
would stop the Threshold Dialog from reopening when the canvas is clicked on.

Running the filter again applies it over the previous run.

This previous version seems to open the options everytime the filter is run. Does the current version have an option to do that, because it doesn't seem to be on by default.

You need to start over.
Undo the current action and redo it.

Alright, now I am back at home. I completely closed GIMP and started it again, created a new image, and applied the filter. It didn't open the options menu, left clicking uses the default tool, the rectangular select, and right clicking has the same file, edit, etc menu as along the top.
