Using gimp 2.8 ish with my 7th-grade class. I have three students who when copying a cutout image and pasting it as a new layer the new layer shows up as translucent. I can't seem to replicate the issue and 50+ kids are not having the issue. The opacity setting is fine. Quitting the program doesn't help nor does restarting. Any ideas what is going on???

First I would check the 'Layers-Brushes' window if mode is set at normal and opacity is 100%.

You can try and reset the preferences,
back to their default values.
To see if this helps.

Also,
creating a new user profile,
sometimes helps correct many issues.
You can create a new Gimp User Profile,
by renaming the current user profile.
In my case,
if I were to rename my current profile.
I would rename it something like,
.gimp-2.8_old.

The Gimp User Folder is typically located at:
C:\Users\Your User Name\.gimp-2.8

Once you rename the current profile.
Launch Gimp and it will create a new Gimp .gimp-2.8 User Profile Folder,
in this same location.

You can then see if this behavior continues,
with the newly created Gimp User Profile Profile.

We're on networked computers that don't have roaming profiles. I'm going to try that tomorrow, but I'm not sure I'll have sufficient privileges.

Sorry,
I'm not sure how that works with Gimp.
Never encountered this issue before.
Try it and let us know your results.

If the paste is semi-transparent it is because the selection wasn't a full selection. In the source image, you can use Windows>Dockable dialogs>Selection editor to check the selection and it will likely appear gray instead of white. But it"s hard to tell why this happen without having an exact description of the workflow, and the source image.
