I've been using GIMP for a while, and with the new version it has been working great. But all of a sudden whenever i use a tool, the outline stays where i clicked instead of moving when dragged, and no matter what will never move. Aswell with that no tools have actually done anything.
EXAMPLE
i erase a dot, the outline of where im erasing is there, the dot isnt erased, and i cant drag the eraser because it only moves my cursor, not the outline.
I'm hoping for a quick reply cause i have a project due soon. :(

Have you tried resetting everything to their default values?
You should be able to find this under Edit>Preference>Interface.

Mia, Responding to chosenplayer :

I know this is an old post, but I am just seeing it now, as I was looking for help on why the latest version of Gimp 2.10.8 seems to have so many problems with its tools and tool settings.
Regardless, I saw this post and will respond to this first to help other users with what I know.

In Previous versions of Gimp, once you selected an area to edit in any way (cut, copy, draw, erase, etc.), you could see the outline of what you selected,
and you could immediately go into that selected area and perform your chosen edit.

NOW, however, once you have selected the area to edit, you have to return to the Tool Options
and click on the Move tool, :move (the icon with four crossed arrows) to activate the area to get the program to accept the command you choose next.

Don't ask me why or how, I only know through my own trial and error that this must be done, otherwise you will not be able to perform any draw or erase actions.
Also if you try to cut or copy the selection without activating the Move Tool, you will cut or paste the whole picture, and not just the selection.
As far as I've seen, I have to do this for any selection I make for any edit I want to perform, be it draw, erase, cut, copy or any filter functions.
If anyone knows why this is happening, and why it was changed, or if you know any other details about this,
please share here so we can get back to using Gimp in some form.

You don't have to choose another tool to activate a selection. Just hit ENTER.
According to the GIMP devs it's done to be consistant over all selection tools ... and to make it possible to edit your selection before you 'fix' it.
