understand some layer modes

GIMP Version: 2.10.9
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

to all
I need to understand the modes: Erase, erase the color and cut out because I do not really see the benefits of choosing these modes.
Erase: the upper layer becomes transparent again but can be reused in another mode, so it's like closing the eye. What is the advantage over closing the eye?
Cut: transparent layer too, what difference with "erase"?
Erase the color: it creates transparent areas on the upper layer and decreasing the opacity.The colors of the lower layer are not changed but those of the upper layer are changed (red becomes green, orange becomes blue...)

@Level_0, I wasn't aware of the translation of the layer mode naming,
but the difference is completely understand.
The word "cut" can be much different from the word "split" and vice-versa.

Wallace, thanks so much for the youtube link. I'd watched some of the Davies videos before [the intro overview of version 2.8... and too soon afterward 2.10...] but but never got to this one. Perhaps when one is ready for the video, the video appears.
