My fonts are out of control, and I haven't even (intentionally) installed any yet. There are far too many fonts on my computer (no idea where they all came from), and I would like to not have to wade through all of them (many of them too similar to tell apart) when I want to use text in GIMP. I don't necessarily want to uninstall the fonts from my system (I probably need them for other software), but I would really like to control which ones show up in GIMP. Is there a way to do that?

Hi enxio27. You need the "addOnCollectionManager plugin from a coder name "ofnuts". Please watch this walkthrough video from rich2005, explaining step by step how to install it and use it.

I have it installed and is really great. When you don't have it installed, Gimp start very slow because it have to installed all the fonts that you have including Windows font. but when you have it installed Gimp start faster and you can manage what fonts you want to use.

Collection manager is great. I also recommend to use it, but it does not affect anyway the fonts that are installed in Windows (system) fonts folder.
If you have lot of fonts in the system folder, and don't want those to show up in Gimp you have to either clean it or edit the fonts.conf file.
I do that in Gimp 2.8 by removing this line
<dir>WINDOWSFONTDIR</dir>
in the fonts.conf that is located in Program Files/Gimp2/etc/fonts.
I have not yet tried this method with 2.10 however, because I'm using 2.8 on Windows and 2.10 on Linux.
On Windows 7 I always use a batch program called "2manyfonts" to get rid of all unnecessary fonts. Don't recommend to use it if you want to see Japanese/Chinese and other non-latin symbol based languages right.

Another way is to use font manager like NexusFont (freeware), pretty much like the addonmanager but when you load a folder, you should be able to use the fonts with all your installed graphics software not just Gimp.

Interesting advice from Nidhogg. I am really a linux user where I use a fontmanager but I will have a look at that in my Win10 (VM) otherwise:

For those fonts that come already installed in Windows:

Win10 can Hide/Show fonts, but unfortunately Gimp will still see them. Gimp is developed in linux where font handling is a bit different.

What you can do is use the tag function. see: https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-tagging.html

You have to use the Fonts dock. If that is not there add it. Windows -> Dockable Dialogues -> Fonts.

Image

1. There is a drop down for filters (initially empty)
2. Any font (or selection of fonts - see the docs) can be given a tag. Different styles can be given any tag that makes sense to you. Handwriting, Gothic...anything.

3. Choosing a tag in the filter, shows matching fonts.

New fonts of course, should be added to the Gimp fonts folder.
If just for occasional use, no need a font manager, Store your fonts somewhere, use a file manager, copy into the Gimp folder and refresh the fonts (bottom of the fonts dock)

That's "ofnuts" with a final "S".

Thanks for that "Tags" tip rich2005. I like how that works here in Linux where there are ridiculous amount of system fonts installed that I don't need or want.

Thanks rich2005....great font organization tips...

I had always relied on Nexus Font Viewer for my other graphic programs, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to "talk" to Gimp... :( ...

This is a very interesting discussion, and many thanks for the tips about tags.. with a bit of work I can make things a lot simpler. I used 2manyfonts to remove most of the unwanted non-Western fonts on my Windows 10 system, and extended it to add the additional ones that MS had added recently.. but those fonts are still referenced in the Gimp 2.10 font list. They are definitely missing from the Windows font list. Both the addition font files in Gimp are empty. I have deleted the font cache and it has rebuilt, but those fonts still seem to be there. Is there some sort of base font list that Gimp is working from - what is the actual source of that list of fonts?
