Yes it is really off topic here why you didn't ask in the Help board..so would be nothing to excuse ?

Anyway happy to help even here since the answer is short:

Supposing you are using some flavor of Windows grab the FULL version of Xnview here http://www.xnview.com

The FULL version (scroll the download page ) or the normal version +the shell integration for explorer
Then to be happy of the result you have to do 1 thing in gimp:
click on the top layer, then Layer/new from visible (that is strictly needed if the top layer is not fully opaque AND/OR not in Normal mode, but in any case will not harm) and only after save

In linux many image browser support xcf, no idea for Mac

I've tried this solution...I also restarted explorer.exe to avoid errors... but I'm only able to preview the xcf through xnview appl. window
but not in a folder!
any idea?

Well i use xnview as a replacement of explorer, or more exactly of the windows image viewer (with the advantage that i can make basic correction and conversion i.e from png or xcf to jpg on the fly ) basically xnview may do the same of the windows image viewer but even much more

About the xnview explorer shell integration should allow to see the thumb of any images you RIGHT click on, inside the right click menu

I personally use FastStone Image Viewer ... it's a great tool... you can't preview and view hdr and exr like in xnview.
for example it allow to preview psd files...
the installed *.dll files, allow to view psd files also in a windows folder without to browse the folder with fastone ;)

I also have a thumbnails preview like jpg... of dds, targa, hdr and exr in window folder.. the only missing is xcf :(

Hey Rod,
thank you for your kind... I'm downloading it and see if the dll files could work in windows explorer by thumb-nailing(?) xcf images.
I let you know :bigthup

by the way for who is interested... to have thumbnails preview of hdri and exr files in a windows folder without browsing it through an image viewer like xnview..
I'm a 3d modeler and I use rhinocheros... I installed the trial version of the vray render for rhino... well this installer contain some dllthat enable windows to thumbnail exr and hdr.
I wasn't able to recognaize the one responsible for the preview.
any one have an alternate solution?

hey all,
i finally found a post from an user with my same problem... and he linked a solutions for win users also like win7 64 like me.
install the file that you can download from the site.... and you'll have a thumbnails in explorer window for all common and mostly used image files type..
without the need to install an extra viewer. i'll get thumbnails also for the xcf file ;)

hey Rod, try to set "thumbnail view" in the folder with the xcf-hdr-exr images
no need to right click for a thumbview in context menu.
to set up the appl correctly go to start and run the application from there.
once you had chosen the file wich you want to have previewed click ok.
restart explorer.exe if needed.
