Thanks for everyone's help on Part I. As promised, I am back with another question.

The old framing and black uneven cuts into the black border and dark random dotted masking. How do I accomplish that on gimp?

Example:

For the random dots:
- new layer, fill with white
- Filters/Noise/HSV noise
- Colors/Threshold, and lower theshold to reduce the number of points
- Filter/Generic/Erode, once or twice, to grow the remaining dots to spots
- Filter/Blur/Gaussian to soften
- Color/Color to Alpha on white
- Adjust transparency (you can also paint over the black with brownish tint)(use "lock alpha channel in the layers dialog)

For the border:
- either Select/rounded rectangle, or if you want the slightly curved sides use the path tool to generate the shape, then "Path to selection"
- Selection/distorts (with low values)
- Bucket fill
- Blur a bit.
