Is anyone else experiencing some odd previews and sluggish speeds when using the cage tool in gimp 2.8? I, as well as a person I've conversed with on g+ have noticed this.

Odd previews no, sluggish speeds no. The fill functions acts odd but that's about it.

I wonder if it's a tool option?

I don't know, if your talking about the conversation after you posted you "Clean interface" topic yesterday, that was me (Wards AKA WardsParadox) trying to help him out. I don't know. I just think he is trying to compare it directly to PS' Cage Tool, which it is not by a long shot.

Has the cage tool been improved since 2.7.6? I found it distorted too much at the edges for my liking. It's something I was looking forward to having seen the PS one in action but sadly, I found it unuseable.

I think so....it seems smoother to me, however it was designed differently than adobe's and has much to be desired.

I'm sure they'll do something good with it in future releases. I'm impatient for that and adjustment layers.

I believe something new is in store for Gimp-3.0 a new warp transform tool.
I would like to see a grid warp tool in Gimp-3.0 myself.
Something that works with nodes. So you can select a grid type "smaller or bigger areas" and even different grid shapes, such as triangular.
Then be able to select 1 or more nodes for pushing the pixels.
Something like this...

I like that and it reminds me of the liquid tool in PS. I used to love that tool and I wish we had it in Gimp. So far, nothing is close. Maybe some day, I hope.

A more direct version of Iwarp would be nice for now. Instead of a preview, make changes directly on the image.

I agree I hate the preview crap.

You may get your wish. Iwarp as an on-canvas tool is one of the features of the new development roadmap: http://wiki.gimp.org/index.php/Roadmap

Yes. I believe that will be the new warp transform tool. Aren't they working on it in GSOC this time around?
I also heard something about adding a new clone tool that is seamless.

If I'm reading the roadmap correctly, it was one of last-year's GSoC projects that's waiting to be merged in.

This year's GSoC projects are listed here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/11663483711 ... JuJXDpHdxZ

What you suggested, Rod, was part of the older paint shop pro, it was the only feature of it that I really liked. Unless I'm doing it wrong I've been disappointed in this new cage warp.

I would like to download Image Editor but I'm just getting a page of nonsense when I click the download link. (Windows)
