GIMP Version: 3.0 RC1
Operating System: Linux
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

I tried changing the colour of a particular area of GIF by colour selecting it. It was a money bag GIF where coin are raining (sort of). I tried to change the colour of money bag by selecting both the shadow colour and bag colour. Luckily 3.0 allows selecting layers, but when I got to colours and try to apply Hue, it is not available for multiple layers.

Then I used layer effect and was able to change the colour of the area I wanted to. But there is no option to export it. I tried it says cannot export as GIF in the last step. Then I tried to apply the layer effects on Layer Group (which is 2 Hue) and select the layers to export. I did all these in Windows 10 and Ubuntu 24.04. But no option to merge down the layer effects. Which mean, I am able to change the color but not export.

Is there any way around or other method available to achieve this? I tried to change the image from RGB to Indexed. But it is greyed out. Then I changed to Indexed first, now I cannot import my GIF at all. I read that unoptimising GIF helps. Even that failed. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I opened this gif image without changing the image mode.
I made the color edit by selecting the bag and using "Colorize",
then exported the image as a gif.
The gif image dialog opened as usual and export was made as a gif without issue.
Not sure if this will be helpful,
but this is what occurred when I tried coloring part of a gif image.

I don't believe you are using 3.0 there though Wallace.
meetdilip, I believe it may be a bug. Have you tried reporting it as such?

And in Gimp-3.0 you should be able to merge any layer effect.

Thanks Wallace, Rod. I started a bug report

Well, you got your answer from the devs. If you want to change the color of the selection, it is one layer at a time.
Then for an animation, take the layers out of the layer group, merge any layer effect into the layer, tidy up surpless layers, change the 16 bit mode to 8 bit and then export.

To colour the selection all layers, wait for that flatpak Gimp 3 to get a gimp_gmic_qt plugin, then it is possible

example: kubuntu 24.04 / Gimp 3.0 RC1 appimage https://i.imgur.com/gfrJtwe.mp4

..but why use Gimp 3 for this, better done with Gimp 2.10.x

That should be automated now in 3.0: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/m ... uests/1292

If there's still issues with 16 bit images not being converted to 8 bit on export, I'd be happy to look at it again.
