I've just restored some jpg files from an external hard drive using a piece of data recovery software. When I try and open the file in Gimp I'm getting the following error message: ' Not a JPEG file, starts with 0x02, 0x00. Opening F:\050226\3.jpg failed. JPEG image plug-in could not open image'. I've looked at the file attributes in File Explorer and it does appear to be a JPG file. I tried within the attributes to find the 0x02 data but failed. I've got over 20,000 files like this so I should very much appreciate any assistance in sorting out this problem. Many thanks.

Looks like it should be an image of some sort. The file isn't corrupted is it?

Long shot, change the extension from .jpg to .png and try again.

It will be a long shot by changing the file extension. Gimp uses a file signature to identify the type of image.
A long list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_file_signatures

Get a binary editor, open the file and have a look at the contents. It should tell you right at the top the file format. Very often you find a file full of zeros and is scrap. This a png "renamed" as a jpeg and a regular jpeg.

Hmm...the only one in the list starting 02 00 is ClarisWorks

I'm getting the same problem when trying to open the file in Adobe Photoshop Express. I couldn't see anything obvious when the file was opened within a hex editor.
