I had notice there are plugins for py. Do you have to have the software or is it just an optional thing?

Here is a tutorial on how to install Python, you have to have that in order to use the python plug-ins.

No, you shouldn't lose those.
print the tutorial out and follow it step-by-step, it will explain everything. It is a very well written tutorial and even I could follow it.

If you keep the folder intact that is mentioned in the tutorial OR save all your scripts in a folder you will have no problems.
You will love the plug-ins that come with python.

It depends:
if you follow the advice to put them in your user directory/.gimp/script you will NOT loose them
if instead you found easier find the script folder in C:/Program Files/gimp/..../script, well in the last case you will lose all of them

In Xp usually programs are installed in Program Files
...and yes...(even if you didn't ask yet i may see in my magik crystal ball the incoming questions ) :
you don't need to unistall gimp first
and so you may just (let the installer ) overwrite it

Sorry, I thought I saw somewhere you were using Windows 7.

My directions were to use the tutorial word for word BUT I don't uninstall Gimp, I just install it over what is already there BUT make sure that when it starts to install you will see a new button named "customize" and when it comes up make sure you click the enable button beside where it says enable Python.
Everyone will tell you a different way, but I just know what worked for me.

Yes I am I managed install it and the un-install ginp and restalled it but the python file is not in with gimp. where have i gone wrong or is it supposed to be like that?

The Python file will be by itself, probably below Gimp in your C: drive
If it is all installed correctly, you should have Python in your Gimp menus.

Another clear case of why you don't advise beginners to install their scripts, plug-ins, brushes, patterns, etc into the global GIMP folders (Program Files). Because as soon as they uninstall and reinstall GIMP (in cases like these) they will lose all the additions they had previously added.

Any GIMP resource is best downloaded to the Users (single user) folders in .gimp-2.6.

Python won't show up in Program Files, it will show up under C:\

Look under Filters on the menu bar, for Python-Fu listed.

From this point, drop any .py plug-in into your Users/Username/.gimp-2.6/plug-ins folder. If you have GIMP open when you do this, you'll have to close it, then re-open it, before the plug-in will register in GIMP.

You may want to test it.
Open a new document and go to Filters/Render/Fog and click that menu item.
Now after the dialog pops up click okay excepting the defaults.
If the dialog opens you should be good to go.

If it doesn't open most likely python isn't working yet.
There could be a number of reasons why.
