I've read a lot of posts in several of the topics but have not seen anything on creating something like the attached pic. I'm sure this can be done in gimp but other than brushes (like the second one) I don't know where to begin. Is this kind of thing done with one of the fractal plugins, mathmap render of some sort or what?

The top one looks like someone took images of a motorcycle and composed different parts into 1 image.
The bottom one looks like just some vector brushes and a few gradient fills in some shapes. :)

Cool looking though.

Check this one out. It consists of 750,000 layers and took over four years to create.

The first one looks to be what the kids call a "C4D" or an abstract image made using Maxon's Cinema 4D, a 3D graphics program. It's the uber-expensive program that the open source Blender is based on, though I'm not sure you could make images like that with Blender. You can do a Google Image search for "C4D" and it'll pull up a ton of those types of images.

The second one may have been made with brushes, but you can get the same results using a C4D on a background with a gradient, set to Overlay mode. The C4D images are often used in signatures that look like that.

You are correct Rod. The second one I did with some brushes I downloaded and looks pretty lame. It was my first attempt and not what I wanted. I'm want that shiny, smooth look, like thick liquid plastic.

Amanda - I looked at C4D and decided I didn't want to pay the price for one and it looked difficult to learn. I have Wings 3D and have not taken the time to really get into it but I have heard a lot about blender, some on this site as well. Is Blender's learning curve difficult or is it more like Apophosis?

Gnutux- That is an incredible picture. I can't even imagine an undertaking of that magnitude.

Your choice of vernacular is somewhat succinct. (and I agree)
