I have been creating new layers using the drop down menu above the image window. My problem is that I can not see the layers in the Layers, Channels,... Panel. Thus I can not navigate or rearrange the layers.
The "Open the layers dialog" is selected.

The "Create new layer" button is gray and does not work. See the attachment.

Please, help me out here. I am brand new with GIMP and like it but this problem is threatening my exploration of the photo editing world.

Your Layers Dialog appears to be configured for manual selection of the associated image. This means that you have to select the image (whose layers you wish to see displayed) from the drop-down box next to the "Auto" button.

Normally, GIMP will automatically update a Layer Dialog when you switch between different images -- and this behavior can be specified from the context menu in the upper-right (the triangle-in-a-box button) or by clicking on the Auto button just below it. But occasionally you will want to have multiple images open with each image having a dedicated Layers Dialog which always shows the layers in the particular image.

I closed the panel and reopened and now I have my layers. Thank you.
