GIMP Version: 2.6.11
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: 7 - SP1
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

No clue whats going on here. Gimp has just started freezing at random times.

It's happened twice in the past 30 mins, completely ruining whatever it was I was working on.

First time - I was right clicking in the layer box so I could merge a layer down. Had the outline of the menu box, but the menu box never opened. Gimp froze. Nothing else was effected.

This time - Re did the entire image, and now I am entering text into the image. Gimp froze while typing in. Same scenario.

Anything you guys can think of?

I will note that I know this program is wrote for Linux systems, but I've never had this type of problem before.

Ok nevermind, found my answer. Seems to be a problem with having too many brushes in the x64 Win 7.

Search > me. :-D

I know; I feel your pain. This has happened ever since I upgraded to Win7 64-bit (2 years ago now). My guess is it's an interupt conflict. I have a particular email scanner (scans my 4 email accounts and notifies me if I get a new message) and when in blinks (which I can't see since it minimizes in my tray) I get a better chance for GIMP to crash. I've posted several times in several forums. Even tried running GIMP in compatibility mode but to no avail. I just save frequently. I'm hoping that 2.8 64-bit (going to probably go complete 64-bit with this version of GiMP keeping 2.6x around for the plugins that I need to have that has no 64-bit compile) eliminates this problem. I have fiddled with the various 2.7x 64-bit builds of GIMP (but not much) and will add that this freeze/crash issue has not occurred with this build of GIMP. Even though GIMP would sometimes crash when I was using XP, it didn't do so at the frequencey that Win7 has and I bet the XP users here have really not experienced this issue and only folks that have can simpithize with you. Again, let's just hope when GIMP 2.8x gets released, all problems like this will go away. :)

Never thought that it would be a too many brushes issue. I already (and recently) removed some of the memory hog gih brushes from my brush directory; only time will tell if indeed that will be the case. :)

Daemon, I have the same problem. Like Lyle, I have tried all sorts of tricks and configurations with windows page files sizes, compatibility modes, administrator mode, single/double cpu mode, gimp tile sizes and 64bit or 32bit modes. None of it makes a difference. Sometimes and especially when using large files or many layers The cpu goes into 50% mode and the machine hangs. Nothing else is affected.
Sometimes I may have 2GB of storage committed and sometimes 560 MB committed to Gimp (according to Windows Task Manager) and it fails. I have never been able to isolate it to a single trigger event or a set of circumstances or a combination of events.
2.6.11 is probably the most stable version. Like Lyle I run win 7 (x64)
Save often is the only advice I have.

Took all my custom brushes out, since I wasn't using any on this image, and no problems. I'm hoping that's what it is. I read where a lot of people noticed the same thing.

A little frustrating having to replace brushes as I need them, but I can deal with it.
