Replace an Existing Layer Image

Operating System: Windows

GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

Hi all, I have a question about an issue I thought should be easy -- but I'm pretty new to GIMP

I have a layer with the layer mask. I would like to be able to replace the layer image easily. The only way I could do it is to: open another image, select all, copy, and paste into. But this is not an elegant solution I'm after.

Is there some script etc. to do that. Or perhaps link layer to an image file, this would be even better.

Assuming your layer is active and there is no selection, you can "File->Open As Layer(s)" the substitute image, perform an "Edit->Cut", then an "Edit->Paste", and finally a "Layer->Anchor Layer".

If you find yourself needing to do this a lot in your typical workflow, a script could certainly be written to simplify the process (that is what scripts are for); but writing a script to eliminate a few steps is not really worth it unless you do it often (the worst part is having to remember how the script behaves when it is rarely used).
