GIMP Version: 2.6.11
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: windows 7 (64-bit)
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

I downloaded Ubuntu, then created an ISO and burned it to a DVD. I want to run it from the DVD to see if I like it. I reboot my pc with the disk in the drive and it keeps coming up in windows.
I then opened the disk manually and I get this screen. I don't want to install it, I just want to run it.
Can anyone tell me why the disk doesn't boot up instead of Windows?
Thanks in advance.

You probably need to change the settings in your computer's BIOS so that it will boot from a CD if one is present. To enter the BIOS settings, you will need to hit either the DEL key or F2 during the initial boot (at least these are typical).

Once in your BIOS, look for a setting such as "Boot Order" or "Boot Device Select" and then change the first device in the list to CDROM and set the second device in the list to your harddrive (usually called HDD-0). Save the changes and exit.

Thanks Saul. I tried that last night, got scared and checked out. I wasn't sure what I was doing. I will try again now.

I tried it again. I couldn't figure out how to reverse the order. It has HDD as #1 and DVD as #2. I couldn't get them switched around. I tried to take a screen shot but it was on full screen so couldn't.
Do you have to do one at a time, and press F10 to save, then go back into it and change the second one? I am right out to sea.

Molly,
Look over this info "BootFromCD".
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

and here "LiveCD".
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

In the BIOS you can make both changes at the same time before you save and exit.

Thanks Odinbc, the BIO is different than mine in your first link. I just can't get the order switched around.
Looking at your second link, I do have it burned properly because it does show all the same menu's inside.
If I was able to take a screen shot, it might make it easier to explain. When it is in full page mode, I can't do that.
Below are the files on my boot disk.

The screen you got the first time is fine. Just hit run and you will get options whether you want to install or run from the disk. The second link I gave you, "LiveCD" shows you the next screens and options you will get after you hit run.

I did hit run and the only option I got is that it wants to install. Can I install it onto the DVD?

Did you boot from the DVD? Did you get the language screen and then the Boot Options screen that were shown on the "LiveCD" link?

No, it won't boot from the DVD. I tried to change the order as Saul pointed out but I didn't know how to do it. I then opened the CD by going to my computer and opened it that way. That is how I got the screen shot of what is in it.

Is it a reasonably new machine?

There is a very good chance that you can get straight to a boot menu without messing about in the bios. Have a look on the start up splash screen for a function key. This example, in the middle but often the reference is at the bottom of the monitor. Key varies, both mine using F11 but in the past F8 and my netbook uses F12, so as with life nothing is certain.

If the DVD fails to boot, you need to check the CRC value, or a better bet is to write to a usb drive using a utility such as unetbootin and boot from usb.

best of luck

In the BIOS you just have to use the arrow keys to navigate. When you navigate to one of the boot order options you change the value by using the left or right arrow keys. You can make any changes you need, nothing is done until you save and exit. Although the order is important if you want to boot from a DVD instead of the hard drive, the BIOS boot order will still cycle through the options until it finds either one, so you needn't worry too much. You can always go and change the BIOS boot order back to what it was or remove the disk and you'll boot into Windows. Don't worry it will be fine.

Thank you guys, I used the splash screen, then F12 instead of going to Bios. Worked perfectly. I am now in Ubuntu. woo hoo. I have it in the "try" mode to see if I like it.

If you haven't solved this yet and from what you stated from the above you'll need to change the boot order. And that's all bios specific. Cause what is happening is it's seeing the HDD first and BIOS is satisfied as far as the boot disk goes. There are usually some sort of instruction on either the lower left or right hand corner of the bios screen were you have the boot order. My BIOS I use the cursor and tab keys to maneuver and the page up/down key to rotate through the choices and enter to confirm.

And no .. you don't have to do one at a time. =) You can make multiple changes and save when you exit BIOS.

It's there. Take step back, breathe and then step forward again. <<- works for me most of the time!

But I have a feeling that is your problem, it (BIOS) never has a change to even see the DVD drive.

Thank you Mrbiggz, it is already solved, I used the splash screen instead of the bios and pressed F12, that took me to the menu I wanted, then I got into Ubuntu.
When I got there, I couldn't find a way to minimize the screen and had to use the on-off switch to get out of it.
I will try it again later, got a few appointments to go to.

Congratulations, I knew you could do it :)
To shut down Ubuntu, look in the top right corner for an icon with options. The Ubuntu web site has some great information and try your local library for some Ubuntu/Linux books, as well.

I looked in all the pull downs and I didn't see it but maybe it might not have that option in test mode. I think it should have but haven't found it yet.

I don't know if the latest version of Ubuntu (11.10 Oneiric) is just right for a new GNU/Linux and GIMP user:
Check this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/863154

Anyway, if you have that problem by setting your tablet in "Screen Mode", is easy to solve. You must install gimp from the following PPA by typing the following from the terminal (copy&paste in each line, and then Enter):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:aapo-rantalainen/gimp26-noghostline

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install gimp

All that I have wrote can be done in graphics mode, but I'm a guy from the terminal and I do not know how to do it from the software center :geek

For a Windows user the new Ubuntu Unity can be scary. If this is your case, don't forget to try KDE or Xfce (Ubuntu family, Kubuntu and Xubuntu).

Linux Mint is a good distro for windows converts. I've been using it since helena. But I'm running ubuntu 11.10 with gnome-shell installed on a jumpdrive and loving it too. Welcome to linux, Molly. It's groovy to sudo. I can say that, can't I? Haha.
