GIMP Version: 2.6.11
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: Ubuntu 11.10
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

Hi all,

I am trying to set up GIMP.... I have 2.6.11 - I would like to get the latest version.... can I use 2.8.4? It sounds great....

I want to start doing some of the pluggins etc as well.... I did notice that layer effects has both script fu and python. How do I know which one to choose???

I am wanting it to be in one window - I understand that will be in 2.8.4....

I did use GIMP way back when - 2008 for awhile..... but have been using PS (CS3) professionally for a few years..... I really like linux - so am checking it out again.... I would like to stay with linux....

I will probably be scripting (ie actions etc) in GIMP hopefully - so I guess I need somewhere to go to learn what I need to do....

I am kind of confused - because it seems like I am stepping in on the middle of a conversation..... I see a lot of tuts about how to use it, but I am looking for how to set it up - as professionally as possible.... for a power-user..... LOL

If you want the 1 window option, I would recommend Partha's' 2.7.4. It is very good.
Partha's Gimp 2.7.4

Welcome to Gimp Chat LoriMomOf9. :)

The newest dev version for Gimp-2.7.4 (actually 5), is out at Sourceforge. It has single window mode capability.
That comes in all flavors. :)
For production use i recommend using the latest stable version Gimp-2.6.11 until Gimp-2.8 is released (end Jan sometime).

I believe there is a link through gimp.org also for the new dev release.

If you have python (which you should out of the box with Linux), use the LayerFX python version as it has preview.

Thank you Rod

With all these tweaks - will I have to do them all over again when the new release is out?

The newest release is supposed to create its own 2.8 user directory or second USER directory.
This is where all your added resources will go.Most likely all deprecations will be fixed to accept most scripts/filters with minimal errors or no errors. At this time they work they are just deprecated.

I know right now Gimp will see your gimp-2.6 user directory folders and copy them as gimp-2.7 user folders so i imagine gimp-2.8 will copy the gimp-2.6 user folders so you shouldn't have to move too much around.
