How do I move layers without leaving an indent where it was? What I have been doing is alpha selection then float and move which is good but after I anchor the indent where it was remains. Do I need to alpha select cut and paste as new layer or is there a simpler way? Thanks

Don't float your selection, just use the Move Tool :move to move the layer.
