Otherwise some rc file deletion may be the fix.
Possibly a corrupted rc file. I would blame gimprc as it usually causes folder errors if something is awry.
I once added a folder inside the patterns folder thinking WRONGLY that gimp would see and load those sorted patterns for me like 8bf's will load, and gimp wouldn't start until i deleted the pattern folder PATH location within the gimprc file.

Took me a while to figure that one out.
