I have used search in this forum and tried various file formats to paste a copied image as a new brush. I keep getting the same error message. This is the image I am using:


If more info is needed I will supply that info. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the build in function or are you trying with a script downloaded somewhere ?

Anyway you may try to
1) start gimp
2) Edit/preferences/folder , expand "folder" (to expand click the tiny black triangle/arrow close to the word) and chose "brush
3) in the windows that open check if the boxes you will see before the 2 paths are marked
If not check both boxes to make them writable
EDIT
4) Before close the window CLICK OK to confirm or nothing will happen !

NB
if you use VISTA or 7 and a portable version of gimp, move away the portable from "Program" or "Program(x86)", any other place is good but there Windows place a lock that prevent change in the program files...and add a new brush is a change

Are you going to Edit>Copy Visible
Then Edit>Paste as >New Brush?

to paste first is needed to copy, so obvious that i did not think about

I hope its that simple PC.
Otherwise some rc file deletion may be the fix.

Possibly a corrupted rc file. I would blame gimprc as it usually causes folder errors if something is awry.
I once added a folder inside the patterns folder thinking WRONGLY that gimp would see and load those sorted patterns for me like 8bf's will load, and gimp wouldn't start until i deleted the pattern folder PATH location within the gimprc file.

Took me a while to figure that one out.

Thanks for the response PhotoComix and Rod. I'm trying what you suggested PhotoComix and yes Rod that is the method I am trying to use. I'll return when I have tried what has been suggested.

Perhaps a little explanation about the way I installed Gimp.
I have it installed on an external hard drive so I can use Gimp elsewhere. When I checked preferences_folders_brushes I found one brush folder on my external drive. I added another brush folder from my internal hard drive. When I did some more checking I found I had several copies of the brush I had wanted to save in my internal hard drive brush folder. The method edit_paste as new brush is working for me now.

Quick question.....Is it neccessary to have 2 folder locations in preference_folders_brushes; patterns; palettes (ect.)?

Some scripts expect it,(and even need the 2nd location "writable" for the rest in theory , No is not strictly needed

But is needed to avoid a mess:
if you install new brush pattern script etc. in the same folder where are that bundled in...how you could distinguish what is a extra from what is part of the program?
because if you delete even a stupid ugly pattern that you will never use, but is a part of the program, then something i.e some filter may stop to work because it expect that pattern there

that is the reason of the duplicated folders, 1 is for the program file the other one is for user's addon, keep them separated avoid many possible problems
