So, this feels a bit silly, but I am not sure if the version of 2.7.6 that I installed has issues - or if I'm just not very smart!

First of all, and most annoyingly, I can't seem to edit my brushes. The "scale" slider is gone - but I think that is right: In gimp 2.8 (and consequently in the preview) this is replaced by being able to edit the radius and angle of the brush instead. Which is fine, except I can't: The slider for radius is greyed out and cannot be moved at all. Is this something I did, or a bug, or something else? Any help would be appreciated!

Also, the toolboxes are setup quite differently. Again I am not sure if everything is as it should be, if I need to do something to the default setup, or if I just need to relearn things for the new version. For instance, the lower part of the basic toolbox used to show relevant submenues for the tool I was using. (For crop, for instance, it had the crop coordinates and whether to restrict to the current layer, etc.) Now there is nothing in the lower part. I can still (usually) find the window I need if I leaf through the top menues - but isn't there a way to get the relevant window by default when I pick a specific tool? I hope that question made sense...

I feel like I can been kicked quite a bit down my learning curve again - and I hope it is not just an issue of getting used to the new version. I hope someone can help a bit... :-)

You cannot edit radius of brushes (also in 2.6.x) unless you have write capability to the brush file. Brush radius is not like scaling - you are actually modifying the parametric brush by chaning its radius value (scaling just applies a factor "on top of" the brush on the fly). You are probably trying to change the radius of a standard GIMP brush. Create a new brush of whatever form you want and you will be able to modify it to your heart's content.

As for the toolboxes and tool options, this is customizable (and has been for a long time in GIMP). You probably lost whatever setting you had when changing to 2.7. Just drag the tool options to the place you want below the tool box and organize the tabs to your liking.

I normally use the middle scroll button to scale all my brushes. This way i avoid the slider adjustment which is very finicky to say the least.
You can set this up in input controllers. I have a video on how here.
