map object

I'm trying to follow this tutorial http://www.gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2255 mapping to a box rather than a cylinder. Trouble is, even though create new image is unchecked, map object is creating a load of new untitled images rather than frames. I know this is a bug because it's happened to me before when trying to map an object without animation. I'm using 2.6.11 and I'm wondering if 2.6.12 fixed this or if there's any other way around it.

Looks like I'm not the only one having the problem. http://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-de ... -or-normal Still can't find a solution though.

EDIT - BE SAFE: Before clicking on the above link read this. http://www.gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=4420

Last time I checked GAP made a bunch of images and than once done complied them together to make the animation?

The first time I tried the tute (on a cylinder) it worked. Now it won't work on box or cylinder because map object is creating new images rather than new layers. You can't use frames to image with a series of untitled images - they have to be named background_0000x.xcf where x is the frame number. It's very rare that map object works without creating a new image.

What version of Gimp are you using? You're saying that map object works on the original image without creating a new one?

When your original layer does not have an alpha channel and you have checked the "Transparent background" option in the Map Object dialog, a new image will be created regardless of the "Create new image" option being unchecked.

The solution is to use "Video->Frames->Modify" to add an alpha channel to the original layers of the frames before doing the mapping.

And the proof...

It's not quite how I wanted it. I've got to play with map object a bit to get to grips with it.

You seem to have a rouge frame in there.Looks like frame 1 is sinking in a little.
Or was it meant to look that way?

I noticed that. I don't know how it happened because I let GAP do everything. When I've done a successful one, if that is still there I'll probably just delete the frame.

Thank you Mo. Excellent tute - highly recommended! I learned a lot about how GAP works through this. Shame you can't animate Fractal Explorer - I'd love to create some morphing Julias or Lambdas.
