Hey, I just am wondering the point of "Allow resizing" in the drop shadow and if any of you have used it? If so, for what? Please understand I'm not being snarky (if it sounds like that), I'm just curious...

:ninja

That's if you want your image to have more canvas added to allow room for the drop shadow if there isn't enough room for the size drop shadow you have chosen. ( :lol That's a bit of a long, rambling sentence.)

Be careful of not allowing it as it can cut off your drop shadow. I've made a somewhat extreme example of what can happen.

Ahhhhhh! I get it! Okay, so you want to do this so your drop shadow doesn't get cut off...thanks, guys!

I guess the only time you don't want to do this is when you're designing something that HAS to have a fixed with; like a web banner or header, for example.

Thanks for the clear explanation, Oregonian!

Another time when you do not want to allow resizing is when you are creating an "inner shadow". For example, to create the shadow inside the wood cutout, you'd typically select the circle, invert the selection (note how the ants march around the outside of the layer), and run the Drop Shadow filter without resizing. However, if you allowed resizing then GIMP would then create a (second) shadow around the outside.

This is good information, saulgoode. I can remember cleaning out a drop shadow around picture frames that I wanted an inner shadow and didn't want the outer shadow. I didn't think it through. Thanks!

Wow, I never even thought to do an inner shadow like that. Cool beans! Thanks, saulgoode.
