When editing text in GIMP 2.8, if one resizes the text rectangle (using the resizing handles) then it seems that the new size is fixed and will no longer be automatically adjusted to fit around the text; and the text may end up being clipped to the new size or word-wrapped to fit within the new size.

I am interested in "restoring" the text rectangle to the state of automatically adjusting to accommodate the text or, alternatively, "shrink wrapping" the final result such that the text rectangle is the same size as it would had no manually resizing taken place (i.e., so the boundaries of the resulting text layer are based on the text and not on the text rectangle).

This problem is not unique to GIMP 2.8, as it existed in 2.6 as well; however, I was hoping that there was now a way to accomplish this.

Any ideas?

I tend to enter my text make sure it fits in the rectangle and then autocrop the layer.

Is this not just one of those annoyances

Start some text, the text box is in Dynamic Mode, move the handles for some reason, such as adjusting the position and the 'box' setting changes to fixed.

I am always having to reset to dynamic to get my text back in view.

I find it very annoying. Half my text always disappears too and it is hard to get it back.

Yes, this is annoying, I agree. What I do is make a very large frame to start with then no matter what I do my text is always visible inside the frame. I then autocrop the text layer to get a more manageable text layer size which then facilitates centering with the alignment tool.

I think no matter what is done to that text box, it's going to be annoying. Like Rich, I try to make it the full size of my image so that I can see how the text sizing works within the framework.

For me, sometimes gimp 2.8 feels like a carton of eggs teetering on the very edge of a table and you hope no one slams the door. It's certainly not as comfortable as 2.6 was.

saulgoode, If you want to "shrink wrap" text, select one of the text box corners.
rich2005, That's a logical feature.
molly, Lot's of people seem to have problems with the textbox. Forget the textbox do everything in the editor and toolbox, worry about the textbox part when your done.

Oho! That is what I was looking for. I hadn't noticed that option. While perhaps not a perfect solution, it does resolve my problem with aligning/centering text. Many thanks.
