Do I need to unistall gimp completely in order to install updates?

GIMP Version: 2.6.11
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: XP - SP3
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

Hi!

I am currently running 2.8.0 and need to update to 2.8.6. Did I miss other updates? IF so, will it matter?

Anyhow here is my ultimate question:
To install or download the new update do I need to
a. unistall my gimp entirely and the install 2.8,6 update
or
b. do I just click download and it will be updated?

Confused

Please help asap!!!

Normally you should have no problem updating your 2.8.0 install with another 2.8.x version. I'm not sure where you got the 2.8.6 update from, so I can't give you a definite yes. The official version at Gimp.org is 2.8.2.

The highest I have seen is 2.8.3 but Odin I think you are right about the highest official version being 2.8.2. STRANGE

I would not have any worries about it.

I did exactly as OP about a week ago, a Win XPSP3 upgrading from Gimp 2.6.11 to 2.8.2 and no problems.

Gimp 2.8 installed in a new folder 'GIMP 2' and deleted most of the Gimp 2.6 folder 'GIMP-2.0' Some non-standard plugins were left behind.

AFAIK it migrates the local .gimp-2.6 files to .gimp-2.8 although in this case I had renamed .gimp-2.6 on a "just-in-case" basis, so I got a clean default folder.

edit: forgot to mention. I have python 2.6 installed. Just left that, did not uninstall. Gimp 2.8.2 python console reports python 2.7.2 which I assume is the 'built-in' version. The python plugins seem to work ok.
