Ello all. I have a question that has two options of answers.. if that makes sense.

first, i made a flyer in publisher on my mum in laws new mac. It has tabs at the bottom that allow people to tear off my contact info. I transfered it to my laptop which has office 2007 so formatting is a we bit different. took a screen shot in jpg format and used gimp to trim out the tabs on the bottom.

Here are my two options. Can i use the gimp to create a email newsletter out of the jpg?
If so, is there a tutorial on it?

If i wanted to design my own email newsletter to email out to customers, how would i do that in the gimp?

I used to work for daz3d.com and they send out newsletters all the time, though i was not in the graphics department.

What format was the file from the Mac?
Gimp is good for the graphics but for the email/newsletter part use Open Office or better yet Scribus.

Ello sorry for late reply. Had a calc 2 review going on all day yesterday. The original extension that the file made on office 2011on my mother in laws pc is the standard extension that microsoft publisher puts on.

I started my own cooking business and i have a website up and running. I want a newsletter to go out once a month or so to advertise my business to family and friends. I would like it to look professional and nice but with out a ton of time. Professional as in it looks pleasing to the eye and makes sense. haha.

if i were to use open office or another word program, do i save it as html or just attach it as a doc?

with scribus, do i save it as html or a doc? im new to this kind of publishing. haha

I would not use a DOC attachment, PDF is much better for control and compatibility for your newsletter. The same PDF can be used as an email attachment or on a web site. Scribus also contains templates you can use or you can customize a template for your own monthly newsletter. After that it's a piece of cake!

The only thing you have to worry about with Scribus PDF is file size. Scribus is designed for print shops so your PDFs will be high DPI. When you use PDF Export you'll have to be familiar with the compression options.

Open Office is quite capable of making a nice newsletter that you could export as a PDF or web page. It contains some templates as well, plus they're plenty more online.

awesome thanks. Ill try to use scribus the best i can. as so scribus can make a document for me so that when the client opens the email, the images(sliced i imagine) and text in whatever format will be displayed with out them having to open an attachment? with all the hype going around of not to open pdf's because it may contain a trojen, i need to steer clear of that issue. haha.

If you only want to make an attractive email newsletter that is not an attachment use HTML and CSS. Here is a great article at sitepoint.com for, How to Code HTML Email Newsletters. There are some tips included in this article that you must know about email compatibility. The result of this method can also be used as a web page.

ok cool. thanks for the info. i used to code html and css back in 02 and 03. ill have to see what i can come up with. maybe i can use the gimp to create a static webpage and slice it up and email it. if not i have enough info for other options. thanks

I saw this tutorial http://gimp-tutorials.net/websitetutorial but im not sure what to do with it once i have the template done? i mean, how do you code the template? IE make the text links and what not? is that something gimp can do or do we need something else?

Maybe that's how some people did it 6 or 8 years ago, not anymore. You only use that method now for mockups.

Responsive web design rules theses days. If you don't want people reading your newsletter on mobiles devices like tablets and phones then do it the old way. If you want the most compatibility with mobile devices AND the desktop do it the sitepoint way. When you design for the web, Think mobile first!

ya its been close to 10 years since i have sliced up anything in photoshop or used dreamweaver to make the hot spots on an image. haha. but i dont want to pay for dreamweaver haha. lol. maybe ill just have to use gmails formatting options haha.
