Ello all. I am having a very strange issue. I am watching a tutorial i made in HD on my machine. I cant find the image i tell people to google search for on google because they moved it or renamed it. So next best thing is to screen shot, select and copy. i am trying to teach my wife how to use the print screen button incase she cant find the image and wants to use the one in the video. Here is the weird stuff. I hit print screen. paste in mspaint like usual. Select the photo i want, ignoring all the rest. i hit copy, and paste as new image. As soon as i do that, only part of the selected image pastes AND for some odd resaon, it pastes part of my desktop in the picture. So i select again and repaste, now it is smaller and MORE of the dekstop is captured. so weird. So i tried a few things. I did a screen shot, turned off the video and hit paste.... NOTHING shows up, just a image of my desktop with media player clasic and a black screen, when before, it had the video showing. haha. So i think the codecs on my machine are having issues. i am using klite codec pack. i have reinstalled them a few times but still same issue. I even tried this in gimp same result...

When i copy and paste as new image with a normal saved jpg, it works just fine. Screen shot of desktop with no videos playing, everything is good. But as soon as i use print screen button on keyboard whilst the video is on pause(to capture the image) and try to select and paste as new imaeg, all sorts of S&^% happens. It does this in mspaint and gimp. i think ffdshow is having issues. i noticed when i used power director to make a movie, sometimes the transition between a certain video and another, the ffdshow icon pops up and then goes away... very odd.

any idea. thank you much

matt

I don't think it's gimp related as I remember that codecs sometimes do not worth the trouble they can bring to a user computer, especially when you're using pre-made codecs pack, I also remember that this can be a pain to properly uninstall and clean or solve the conflict with the bad ones..

Your watching the video with Media Player Classic and taking the screen capture with Windows XP native print screen utility?
Have you checked to see if MPC has it's own screen capture utility?

Edit,
How to Create a Screenshot Using Media Player Classic
I took a quick look at this tutorial. In the options screen they pick, VMR9(Windowed).
It appears to render an array of screen captures, you might have to try another option for a single capture.

I would recommend you try VLC player, it can easily capture screens. It also has all the codecs you need included so you don't have to download extra K-Lite codec pack stuff.

Yes i am watching it in mpc and i tried in wmp as well. I was just using the print screen button on the keyboard. I will see if mpc has a screen print option. This is very odd. Need to find better codecs or something

I second this, VLC may be missing some exotic decoders and experts video features but for home usage it does a perfect job.

I have been using VLC for years and years and it is the best of the best. It has its own built in Codecs. Can't go wrong. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

Looks like i will grab vlc player then. Totally forgot boit them. I jad it blocked because you can stream no no stuff through it. Haha. I think the only reason i needed to codecs were to watch flash, dvds, and vob files from ripped dvds for backups. I will uninstall codecs and try again with vlc. But maybe ill do a screen capture to show what is happening haha

Both MPC and VLC will do the job.
Have not used MPC for some time but it can take a little setting up.

whereas VLC comes with all its own codecs and is very straight forward.

The frame-by-frame only advances forwards but you can step ahead/back in about 3 sec steps with shift-arrow keys.
For windows users I would try the portable version from portableapps.com

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hp0SRcYz ... e=youtu.be

notice how the screen capture utility didnt see anything but yet on my screen i can. Plus, when im in mspaint, notice how i move the cut region around and its all crazy

here is the video i was playing on my computer. this is a tutorial i made and uploaded it to youtube so the original is on my machine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRhAUoLuEfM. I was playing the original video and then using print screen to get a pic of the eye. this tutorial was made for my wife so she could learn the gimp. but i lost the image i had saved so i was trying to cut and paste from a screen shot and thats when it was all jacked up. haha

ok, i tried with vlc player. exact same thing. it is driving me crazy. haha. i have unistalled all klight codec packs and mpc. i wonder if it is just a bug in windows haha

EDIT. figured it out. I re tried it in vlc this time using built in snapshot as recommended. Apparently something is wacked with win xp and cant recreate images captured using unknown codecs. I still couldnt get it to work with klite so im glad i switched to vlc.

thanks guys. Im not sure if it is a bug or what but it is fixed and i hope no one else runs into this issue. if they do, we know what to do know. haha

That rings a bell, I it is to do with hardware acceleration and the evil DX9.

Video captures as "black" maybe.

Solution is to temporarily disable hardware acceleration.
Choose Start -> Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced
Then Troubleshoot & move the Hardware Acceleration slider to 'None'.
Apply, OK, etc..etc and reboot.

A bit like playing Monopoly

easiest is to use VLC
