GIMP Version: 2.8.1
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: Win 7 64 bit
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

List any relevant plug-ins or scripts:
file-apng.exe

List any ERROR messages you received:
Warnings:
On 1 machine when the 'Export Image as PNG' windows appears...
D:\Graphics Design\Gimp\GIMP Application\Gimp-2.8.1\share\gimp\2.0\themes\Defaul

then after clicking 'Export' on both machines I get...
libpng warning : Zero length keyword
libpng warning : Empty Language field in iTxt chunk


Hi all.
I recently replaced my file-png.exe with file-apng.exe on both my Win 7 64 bit computers to enable the creation of animated PNG files.
Both are working OK and save both animated and normal PNG files successfully.
However on both machines I receive the above mentioned warnings.
I was hoping someone can advise what is causing these warning messages and if it is normal or what I can do to fix them.

Themes are not my strong point, so any advice would be appreciated.
If it turns out that I am using obsolete themes, can you recommend a safe place to get new ones?

I don't receive any warning messages. And I don't think it's normal.
Have you replaced libpng15-15.dll with the patched one?
If not try samj's build here http://registry.gimp.org/comment/12685#comment-12685.
Full installation instructions are in the 'read me' file (lisez-moi).

I wonder if your other export plugins relying on file-png.exe are still working, e.g. Openraster plugin (save with .ora extension)?

When I am next logged on I will update this post with the exact wording... I guess it is relating to the 'theme' I am using on that computer.

It's better to keep the old file-png.exe also.It does not cause any problems for both to be in the plugins folder together.

Thanks for your reply Rod. I'm sure the readme instructions in the version I used said to replace the file-png.exe with the new one, but I'll look into it...

I have updated the original post to include the warnings I get on my second computer regarding themes issue...

I do have a libpng15-15.old in the directory with a newer/larger libpng15-15.dll version so I assume I did do it at the time.
I looked at the link you gave, but unfortunately the link to samj's zip file is obsolete...
Tried your suggestion to test saving an .ora file and that plugin complained it couldn't find file-png-save, so I put back the old file-png.exe plug-in-file-png.ui and that fixed the .ora issue - so thankyou.
However, now when I save a PNG file the Export PNG dialogue doesn't show the animation options anymore. I am using Partha's 2.8.1 build. What am I doing wrong?

There is nothing you're doing wrong, it's just the way it is. A conflict between file-png and file-apng plugins.
Other users may have different experience but this is what I was getting (using apng since 2010) before I found a better solution.
1.When you have both png and apng plugins, the former takes precedence and you can no longer save PNGs as animation.
2. Replacing file-png with apng plugin allows you to save animated PNGs and simple PNGs, but when you try to export your documents with some other file extensions GIMP is using plugins that call for file-png in gimp lib directory. There are quite few of them: save for web, save as ora, svg, swf and some other 3rd party plugins for export operations. Here you have 2 options: a) move file-png back and forth (like you did), b) modify file-png-dependent plugins to make them work with file-apng (I had to change 12 such scripts and plugins in my GIMP)
3. The best option, though, is to forget about apng plugin. It's not good. If you are seriously into apng animation try free APNG Anime Maker. Unlike GIMP apng plugin, with Anime Maker you have control over frame rate (even for individual frames), compression rate and optimization option, which directly influence animation quality and file size. All you have to do is to save your layers in GIMP as individual PNGs and then open them in APNG Anime Maker. It's an extremely easy to use lightweight software (1MB) which comes as zip* file(no Windows installer or Registry changes, works from wherever you unzip it)

If you replaced the UI file with the old one you will not see the animation options.
The new UI that comes with the APNG file is the one you should have in your plugins folder.
It sounds like you switched it to the older one?Try switching this to the new UI and see if that works.
So in short keep these in the plugins folder.
file-apng.exe
file-png.exe
The UI file that came with APNG

Also because file-png is present you will need to save as PNG-APNG in the save as drop down list.

There is/was no 'old' file-apng.ui on any of my GIMP installations (GIMP 2.6 through GIMP 2.8.4)
I don't think it exists in any standard installation. The only one UI I have/had comes with samj's apng plugin.
Samj's build of the plugin works fine, but you don't save it as PNG-APNG, though, just as PNG and then check 'as animation' box
in the export modal dialog window.

I placed the files exactly as mentioned but for the life of me no matter what I tried if I leave the original file-png.exe in the plugins folder when the UI appears it just has the Help Export and Cancel buttons.

So after :gaah I have decided on scrapping file-apng.exe putting everything back as it was and using the APNGAnimeMaker that you suggested in your earlier post K1TesseraEna.
