Hi and as promised here is my first silly question (...didn't want to disappoint anyone )

The problem I am currently experiencing is the ability to print off my experiments so far. I have checked over the tutorials but can't find any specific help there and the search facility has thrown up lots of past enquiries but not so basic a question as my own. What I have so far attempted to do is to click on the FILE tab and then select the PRINT option which is near the bottom of the list that then appears but notice that this print icon appears grey and presumably not active for me to use (should it look more illuminated if active?). I can hear the computer attempt to process my instruction but the noise falls silent almost immediately.I read from the manual that there is supposed to be a new preview printing dialogue box that should appear but at the moment that seems a long way off. Is there a particular protocol that I need to follow before printing can be enabled. e.g that work must be saved in a particular way?

So guys what am I doing wrong, as I'm sure it's going to be something pretty basic (...and for me embarrassing LOL).

Where did you get you Mac version of Gimp?
It seems strange your default printer wouldn't pop-up when you use, File | Print.
Have you had any issues printing with other programs?
Hopefully someone with a Mac will drop by soon to add some insight!

I know nothing about Macs.
So don't know what could be wrong.
But I use "gutenprint" for printing with my Epson Stylus Color RX560.
Gutenprint is available for Macs just google gutenprint.
Results are far better than with the original Gimp print command.

I never print from Gimp. I always save my file to the desktop and print from there, never have had a problem with it in any Gimp version. I currently use Partha's McGimp 2.8.4 on my macbook with Mountain Lion.

I print from inside GIMP all the time - but using Linux.

The print option should be possible to illuminate and select. There pops up a dialogue that you can do all sorts of adjustments in before printing. The question is probably if printing works from other programs - i.e. if you have the correct drivers etc installed.

You can always test by saving your image to a jpg and printing from the normal mac desktop.

Hi and apologies for not coming back to acknowledge the response given.

Many thanks for all the contributions offered and can report that I am now able to print off my experiments to date, be it by saving it to a folder and then printing from a previewed file within it.

Odinbc: I downloaded Gimp from the list offered from Gimp's own website http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/Download.html

gerard82: Thanks for recommending "gutenprint" which I have downloaded. Can you tell me what it is, why you use it and how do I link it to Gimp so that I can use it too.

2-ton: I could only download Gimp 2.6 because my version of Mac is 'Tiger' and maybe the print dialogue version comes up with more recent updated versions.

Griatch: No matter what I do, I can't illuminate that print icon and access that dialogue box and maybe the drivers on my printer are not up to the job?

One thing that I am having a problem with (I'm sure it's me) and that is when I decide on a size of my working image, which I select via the "Create a New Image" dialogue box that appears when I first want to create a new project by pressing (FILE>NEW). I select a width and height size in mm and then press the OK button but the resulting working template is not the same size at 100% though the scale along the top and down the left hand side has the correct values. Have I done something wrong or have I misunderstood what I am looking at? Is there a video that explains this.

Apologies for the questions but I just can't seem to get off the ground at the moment with this system. I'm not experiencing a learning curve but a brick wall at the moment but thanks in advance for digging me out!

Hi ASTROMAN,
As you can see in my sig I'm a Linux user.
The distro I use has a package manager where you can indicate that gutenprint should be installed as a gimp plug-in also.
How to go about this in a Mac I have no idea.
Maybe it's done automatically.
To check that:Open some file in Gimp and then look at the "File" dropdown menu.
With luck you should see "Print with Gutenprint".
Then you still have to tell gutenprint which is your printer.
