Brush Dynamics

GIMP Manual v2.8 shows that there is a selection in Dynamics that is Color from Gradient. I do not have that option. The option I do have is Random Color and that gives very undesirable results when I want a smooth gradient look. Does anyone else have that problem?

Here is the section of the GIMP manual with the information:
http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-concepts-gradients.html

The image is part of a screen shot from the manual and I added what I get when I use the Random Color option.

Yes I have the same problem. I really miss the paint from gradient in 2.6.11.

That should be removed from the v2.8x manual then.

I do not have that preset either, and I can't figure out why the GIMP manual refers to something that actually doesn't exist yet or anymore. :puzzled

Nevertheless, this kind of setting can be easily reproduced in the following way:

  • create a new Dynamic through the special button placed in the Paint Dynamics dialog; if you want, rename this preset to "Color From Gradient" or something similar;
  • in case, double click on the newly created preset in order to activate the Paint Dynamics Editor;
  • select the "Mapping Matrix" item on the drop down menu and turn on the check box connecting the "Color" row and the "Fade" column;
  • lastly, in the Tool Options dialog, make sure to set the "Repeat" option to either "Triangular Wave" or "Sawtooth Wave".

As you will be able to verify, the effect resulting from this method should substantially be the same one which was achievable with the comfortable "Use color from gradient" option available in GIMP up to version 2.6. :)

Yes O, I agree, it shouldn't be in the manual if it isn't available.

Ginod...that sounds like a good idea. I will try that. To me that should have stayed where it was in the previous version of Gimp.

Just set Color to Random in the Mapping Matrix box for Dynamics_Off preset and it will be adding colors from the chosen gradient.
GIMP manual isn't 100% up to date, BTW.

Here is a tutorial that tells how to make a Dynamic that works. I haven't tried it but will report back.

The image in the OP tells me you used Random Color dynamics, O!
It's different from Dynamics Off preset.
The method I suggested works for me anyway.

I tried it your way, kite. Started with Dynamics Off preset and got the same results as I did from Random Color.

Here are the results I got with the tutorial.

OK, sorry, my bad, O!
I see what you mean now! You want smooth color blending brush stroke.
Cool tutorial! Thanks

I guess I could have worded my request a bit better. Smooth color blending is much more descriptive. No prob, kite.

They could have made the Dynamics editing a bit simpler. I have a hard time getting to the "New" dynamic phase. The tutorial says to right click on a dynamic, but that doesn't work.

You'll never convince me of that, kite. I know better.
