Must I allways go to Save for Web dialogs ?

GIMP Version: 2.8.4
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: XP - SP3
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

I was very satisfied with the time saving option: File - Rewrite (file name).
Then I installed a plugin - Save for Web.
So, if I once use this option (Save for Web) and gone through the corresponding dialogs for optimize an image - it seems i cannot use more the Rewrite... option. I tried, but the resulting image is not optimized.
Must I always go to dialogs to save already optimized image?
Or, maybe I'm missing something using the plugin ?

I'm not sure what you're asking.
Save for Web and Overwriting document are separate from each other actions.

When you Save_for_Web plugin opens its own Save_Image dialog. Note, it still uses the word 'Save'.
You are actually exporting to a different file, not overwriting your current image.

Exporting of your current doc with GIMP native plugin offers to Overwrite only if some changes
to the doc have been made.
Look at image title on the top of GIMP window. If you see a little asterisk * in front of the image title,
your document is 'marked dirty' and thus needs to be saved as different doc or overwritten.
If it's 'marked clean' (no *, e.g. you made no changes or after you saved them), you won't see Overwrite option.

Edit. When you create a doc in GIMP it is always XCF file, there will be no Overwrite option
even if you Saved_for_Web. You current doc is still a XCF file and there is nothing to re-write.
In other words, Overwrite is for imported bitmap images only, not XCFs.

It sounds like the plug-in creates a temporary optimized image before it saves it, leaving your original image unprocessed. In that case, you're going to have to run the plug-in each time you want to save the image. You're not going to be able to simply select "Export to.." and end up with the optimized image.

If you use a third party plugin to export an image Gimp has no history of the export. Also keep in mind Save for Web is an old (pre 2.8x) plugin that hasn't been updated. Gimp 2.8x export works quite well as is. If your looking for a few more (export for the web) options, have a look at the RIOT plugin.

RIOT is one of the best plugins (and not just for GIMP; have Irfanview version as well). Highly recommend this plugin for your save for web issues, but I usually use it for PNG optimization.

If your using RIOT in IrfanView you get RIOT lite. Rename the Riot.dll in the IrfanView plugin folder to Riot.dll.old. Copy the Gimp's Riot.dll to the IrfanView plugins folder. Now you'll have the Extended version of the RIOT plugin in IrfanView. More info at the RIOT download page and while your there check out the RAW + HDR plugin package. I've only used it with the full version of RIOT.

One more note, if you download the full version of RIOT get the portable version (they say it has no OpenCandy, still be cautious). The full version is bundled with an OpenCandy installer. OpenCandy is not malware, it's just annoying, it adds 'options' to install additional unwanted software. Easy to bypass, but still annoying. Thumbs up to the RIOT folks they mention this on there web site.

PS,
The RIOT plugin at the Gimp Registry is clean.
It now has an installer so be careful during install.

Had actually downloaded the update for Irfanview at Riot's site a year ago (have to admit I've not recently updated RIOT for either Irfanview or GIMP) Odin that that is good info for others. Irfanview indeed only ships with the light version of this plugin (why; have no clue).

The question is:
- If I save and optimize an image with the Save for Web option
- And then made some changes on the image
- And then I want to save that changes
- I have two options:
1. Save for Web - again the same dialogs as earlier, each time
2. Rewrite file - short way, but the image is not more optimized.

So is it possible, if I once optimize an image with the Save for Web option - simply go to Rewrite... - and get optimized image, without calling Save for Web dialogs each time ?

You need to understand one simple thing - the image you saved for web and the image currently opened in GIMP are
DIFFERENT images.
Workflow goes like this:
1. Open Original.png
2. Save with Save_for_Web plugin to Web.png
Note, now you have 2 different images, one original.png (opened in GIMP), and Web.png (not yet opened in GIMP)
3. Open Web.png from the folder where you saved it
4. Edit Web.png
5. Overwrite Web.png

- the new png has 14kb more (without any changes, just open and overwrite. - So it is not more "optimized".

When overwriting images GIMP tries to preserve the best quality for png (jpeg, etc).
In png modal window (when you export as png with GIMP native plugin) uncheck Save_resolution option and save this setting as default (Save/Load buttons)
GIMP will be overwriting without increasing file size (again, depending on the changes you made). Now every time you overwrite PNG it will go with this setting.
