Hi there,

I'm attempting to remove the red colour from the border of this image. I don't want to make it white, but I would like to turn the redish pixels to light grey so that it blends well with light and dark backgrounds.

I would be most grateful if you could provide steps to achieve this. I've tried a number of different ways of achieving this to no avail (probably due to my ignorance of the software!).

You can do it with just one layer. Open your png in gimp, then go to the color select tool, set the mode to 'add to current selection', the Threshold to about 25 or so and then click on the orange parts. this will select any and all orange and if you click around enough, it will select every pixel with that color.

Once you have a satisfactory selection, go to the paint brush tool and pick a suitable color from the color swap. Click on the foreground color (default black) to get a color editor. Then paint on the selected areas that are the edge of the icon, don't paint on the middle red exclamation point.

Once done, export to png and you're golden.

- Lock the alpha channel (checkerboard in the "Lock" line above the Layers list). This will act as a masking tape for the transparent part
- Set your foreground color
- Start the paint brush, use a hard brush wide enough to over the border, narrow enough to maneuver around the exclamation point (3-5 pixels).
- Set the paintbrush tool to "Color" mode (top of tool options)
- Paint without fear along the border: the transparent parts are protected by the alpha-lock, and the white ones will stay white because white isn't affected by a brush in color mode.
