Simple animation gif?

GIMP Version: 2.6.11
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: XP - SP3
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

I've watched some tutorial vids but haven't found anything specifically for what I want to do. It should be a fairly simple process but can't quite seem to figure out all the steps. Basically what I want is to take a background image, for example a basketball court, and animate a basketball dropping from the top and onto the court. This is not the specific gif I want to create, this is just the "effect" I want to know how to create.

I've messed around with the layers and animation functions, but I'm just missing a key step or two somewhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Load this animated gif into your gimp.
Maybe this will give you some ideas and a starting point.
Then come back with any further specifics you may need and someone is bound to assist.

There are many animation tutorial for Gimp. A tutorial doesn't have to be specific to what your trying to achieve, they will give you a basic understanding of what you need to know. Try a few tutorials, once you're comfortable with the workflow it shouldn't be too hard to adapt a technique that works for you.
