GIMP segfaults error 14 on startup

Operating System: Linux
OS Version: Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

Hello,

If I use gimp 2.6 from the official repository, there are no problems.
However, if I install it from the ppa otto-kesselgulasch, it won't start at all.
From the terminal, all I get is a segfault message, even with the --verbose option.

dmesg returns this:
segfault at 30a0fd7cbd ip 00000030a0fd7cbd sp 00007f0a8e3e6c60 error 14

I tried the usual, purging the previous version before updating, etc.

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64.

Better take this with Otto.... he lists his Skype and Facebook coordinates on https://launchpad.net/~otto-kesselgulasch/+archive/gimp

I don't have Facebook, Skype or Google plus accounts. Is there another way to reach this otto guy?

UPDATE: If this can be of any help, I used apt-src to build and install instead. I got the exact same result. How can I find out what function call failed using the IP shown in dmesg?
