I am using Ubuntu 12.04. I started with Gimp 2.6 and generated some graphics wih no problem. I then decided to upgrade to Gimp 2.8.6.
I removed 2.6 completely and installed 2.8 using:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gimp
I immediately began having problems in Text Mode while repeating the same procedure I used before. I created a path, entered some text went to Layers and moved the Text to Path. When I tried to Rotate the text Gimp immediately shut down. I have since found that I can delete the text layer if I use Edit=> Undo or if I delete that Layer when I first open the file I am working on, after that it will crash no matter what function I try to do while in Text Mode.
After removing 2.8, I then tried to re-install 2.6 with Ubuntu Software Center but I got an error message:
UNABLE To VERIFY (I believe that was the wording)
gimp gimp-help-common gimp-help-en gimp-help-en-gb
OK REPAIR
Neither option would allow the install to continue.
I have now re-installed 2.8 and I am still having the problem with Text.
Anyone have any ideas?

Has Ubuntu not officially pushed out GIMP 2.8.6?

Another Ubuntu user just posted about a major problem with that same PPA yesterday, so I suspect there is a problem with the GIMP package provided by the individual who created that PPA.

I think your best bet, in this case, is to contact the PPA provider or better yet, wait for an official Ubuntu roll-out of GIMP 2.8.6.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the whole concept of PPA's. The overriding question becomes; who do you really trust to provide binaries for your Linux distribution?

If you want to go back to version 2.6, you must also uninstall libgimp-2.0-dev (if you have installed).
Best to check in synaptic.
