In this picture...you see the 1 inch round images in background...that I know about..but how are they making the 2 that is larger and brought up? I so want to do that will my digital sheets..and I'm totally clueless..LOL

Step 1: Create a selection around your original bottle cap image, either using the Ellipse select tool, or Fuzzy select tool (magic wand). If your bottle cap image is on a transparent background, like in the attached micki.xcf file, just right click the bottle cap layer and select "alpha to selection" to get your selection. Save the circle selection to path. Select - To Path.

Step 2. Create a new white background above the bottle cap layer. Activate the circle path selection. Fill that selection with a medium gray color (I used #7e7e7e). Turn off the selection (Select - None), apply a Gaussian blur at 30px. Reactivate the circle path selection, invert it (Select - Invert). Press delete to remove the outside excess. Turn off the selection again (Select - None). Click the eye on the blurred circle layer to turn it off.

Step 3: Select the bottle cap layer, go to Filters - Map - Bump Map and use the following settings. (Your target bump image is the grey blurred circle layer):



Step 4: On the bottle cap layer, go to Filters - Light and Shadows - Drop Shadow and apply the following settings:



That's it.

Dang, thats to much for each sheet to do..I'm thinking I'm gonna download picassa or whatever googles thing is and see about doing a collage with them. thanks for answering..

If you created templates, in which you use the same size bottle caps over and over, its not hard at all. You just make one template and perform the simple bump and drop shadow in two easy steps.

Maybe, but all I'm wanting to do is enlarge the digital sheet a little, then take 2 or 3 of the images off that sheet and enlarge them and put them on top so that when you open the page you are getting a close up of the images..hang on let me see if I can find another one.

ok in the one below....see how they took 3 and made those larger, so you get a real good close up of the design they did...thats what I want to do with mine after I make them.

I'm also wanting to be able to turn my template up and down...its across now..let me show you the difference. How can I turn the whole template..so thats it's 3 across 5 down instead of 5 across 3 down?

You can always copy a bottle cap you select, paste it as a new layer, and then use scale to resize it (aspect ratio chain linked) then apply a slight drop shadow. I thought you were asking about how to do the larger bottle cap bevel, not making them larger.

Now that sounds a little easier...LOL I will try that..

As for turning a 5 x 3 into a 3 x 5, there are a number of ways, but none are without a little bit of tinkering. If you're wanting to keep the image of the bottle cap upright as well, this is a bit more complicated. I know of no easy way to do this. For blank templates, you'd need to reset the canvas size to accommodate a rotate, then crop. You could also use Layer - Transform - Rotate 90, but you'll still be required to adjust the canvas size to prevent the rotate from being cut off. You can crop it to proper size after rotating.

This has me thinking: Rob A (I think it was Rob) created a script for sorting out scanned images so that people wouldn't have to crop an entire scan of pictures one photograph at a time. I think a similar script would work great in finding all circles on one image and rotating them 90 degrees, after performing rotate on the entire image. I'm going to see if I can rotate multiple sets of selections at one time. UPDATE: EPIC FAIL. (Unfortunately, you can't set multiple points of centerlines on selections, so it rotates from "one" selection point only)

woohooo got the template changed..now to figure out how to get a circle image instead of square..see when I place a image on the template it's a 320x320..then I click the arrow down button..thingy and it fits it to the round template...LOL but when I copy one to a transparent new layer..it goes back to square..does that make sense?

Yes and no. I understand if you are copying an entire image selection, it will be square on a transparent background, however, if you are copying circle selected images, it should only be pasting as a circle, not square. Not sure what you mean by the arrow down thingie... can you clarify or show a screenshot?

ok here are 4 shots in squence so you can see what I mean. In 1 shot..the heart is a square image

2nd shot...moved it over to template..still square

3rd shot....look over to left,under layers,channel thingy..see the green down arrow lit up?

4 shot..in new post below..when I click that it will make it a circle same size as template..notice part of top or heart missing...not sized right..but wanted you to see the difference.

continued..Now if I take it back off and put it on a new layer it will be the square again.

I would convert the heart image to a brush and paintbrush them into the circles.

The method you are using above is actually more work for you. Instead of having transparent circles, leave them solid and work with paths or selections instead, that way any image that is originally square when copied and pasted won't matter as long as the background colors are the same. Make sense?

I can do that but the only problem is the white around it...maybe do it to the transparent thing? but that still doesn't help with the square template...I need circle template. to start the images off on..so that they will always be a circle not a square put into circle.

Selections will remove anything outside of it. If you had a page of circles, 3 x 5 for example and those circles had paths, when you paste anything on top of the template, and then apply the path to selection and invert, you delete away the excess all at once, in one simple step. Try to puzzle in a square into a transparent circle is more work. Unfortunately, like PS and PSP, GIMP doesn't have the same fill selection with image. It can do patterns, but that's it.

You misunderstood what I meant about the brush. You can essentially turn any image into a brush, you can take the heart and convert it into a brush all it's own, with no squares.

I think I need a tutorial...I'm sure I know what your talking about..but without pics..I'm clueless...yes I'm the type that looks at the picture on the box..not the instruction that comes with it...lol

I made a video that showed the entire process, a month ago, but it seemed to be too overwhelming for you.

Open a new image, any size, with a white background. Proceed to scribble all over the image with paintbrush, airbrush, whatever you which. Be like a kid with crayons.

Without making any new layers or anything, just use the Ellipse tool and make a circle in the center of the image, fill it with white. Go to Select - Invert, press delete. See what happens to the original layer background.

Also, I converted the heart to a brush, add it to your brushes folder in .gimp-2.6/ (see attachment below)

the center is white and the background is pink...i used pink..LOL where is that tutorial..I go look at it again.. not understanding what I just did with the crayons and select invert delete...nothing really looks any differnt to me.

No, you did exactly what I wanted you to do. The reason your background is pink, is because your layer didn't have an alpha channel, and therefore it chose the same color as your current background color selected, which is pink, right?

If you right click the layer and add an alpha channel, then delete an inverted selection, the background outside your circles will be transparent. Make sense?

Whoa, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. A tutorial at this point wouldn't help, until you first understand what's happening. I am going to make a sample xcf file of just paths of circles 3 x 5, nothing else. We'll work from there.
