Text not showing up

GIMP Version: 2.8.4
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

I tried to put text in this file but when I do it doesn't show up. The color of the text is black while the background the text is supposed to be on is gray. I typed a but it became very large when its supposed to be on 18 and it doesn't show up

hmmm... there are lots of things that could be the problem here, i think we need a little more info to be able to help you. if the "a" was big in 18 px i wonder how big the image is? i also wonder if you have by accident put the text layer under the background layer (i hope you don't take it as an insult that i ask that - that's something i've learned to check because it's happened to me a couple of times).

There are no bug reports for gimp 2.8 that confirm your problem.
Maybe there is something you're not doing right?
AnMal is right. A lot of things that could have gone wrong.
Make sure you change text color either in tool options panel or in text editor window above text box.
Check out if text layer opacity is 100% and layer mode is normal.
In Text tool options pane change text box mode to Fixed (opposite to Dynamic), drag a text box on canvas and then type.
