GIMP Version: 2.8.4
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: XP
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

I have no idea how to make circles & grids in GIMP (I could perhaps make them in Excel and then copy/paste as layers into GIMP), that's why I wanna learn :jumpclap So any help/hint/link to tutorials are very much welcome :tyspin :hi5

Background image:

What I would like to learn to make:
1. cut a circular image out of square one and place it in the middle of the flower (brown part - seeds) - how? and how to measure the size of the seeds part :tomduck

2. make 10 little circles and place them on flower's petals - i will put circular flags there. How to make those circles to be exactly 36° apart? i could draw that by hand with a compass but in a graphic program :huh

3. use outer grids to create something like this:

what would be easier - to simply write on the image grids or make new ones?
and if the latter, how to make them like on the image above? I understand there isn't much space on the background image I provided but I want to learn to make grids in GIMP :duck I hope it's not too difficult.

That's basically it, eternally grateful for any advice. :thanku

Look at Filters/Render/Gfig for the basic geometric shapes. But I don't like it because geometric shapes are better done using and transforming paths and Gfig doesn't create paths. So my favorite tool is the shape-path script.

For many things you'll have to learn to use the Rotate tools in Path mode. If you are smart you can minimize your work: for instance, instead of taking one circle and rotating it 9 times, you rotate it once, merge the two paths, and then rotate it 4 times.

To measure things there is the (tadaa!) Measure tool.

Then you can also be lucky... for instance to create these 10 circles, I used my path-inbetweenerscript, telling it to go from the the small circle path (in red) to the small circle path again, telling it to generate 10 steps (in green), following a guide path (in blue).

you can do a lot of the stuff you described very easily in Inkscape, like putting objects on a path

but you can arrange objects in a circular pattern in Gimp with the clone layer tool
thats a script and you can get it here:

Yep. Inkscape is made for stuff like that. You might be able to hack it in GIMP, but Inkscape has things like measurements, angles, and snap to points that will keep you from having to make a bazillion guides in GIMP.

Multi-Replicate script is worth a look!

this sounds like something you could do with Rononour`s excellent Pack Sprites filter (thats in G'MIC)

Wow guys, thanks for all your help!! I did look at all and found them a bit tough so I experimented myself a bit and solved 1. & 2. :)
1. elipse tool, aspect ratio 1:1 - easy peasy
2. used pan to bow script. :)

now if you have any ideas how to make grids similar to those in the 2nd image and coherent with the 1st image, let me know! :)

- Make one rectangle on its own layer, autocrop the layer, multiply and space vertically and evenly
- Make a circle selection,
- "Select/to path", make the path visible
- Move the rectangles horizontally and align their center (small cross) on the path (depress Control while you drag to make sure you move only horizontally)
