ok i know it sounds really simple but the easiest way for me is to add an alpha channel> use the path tool go around what i would like to cut out>selection from path>select>invert>del and i have my cutout, but they dont always come out like i had hoped, i have been practicing awhile and they have been getting progressively better. but i deleted all of my pictures and some of my programs because my laptop was running slow so im back to ground zero. any help/tips to making the renders better?
thanks

Don't limit yourself to one technique. The Path Tool works well in most situations, but the Fuzzy Select can sometimes be quicker and do a better job with complex edges. Personally, I prefer to use a layermask rather than cutting out selections (painting black the area to be removed) -- this permits easy recovery if I accidentally remove too much (just switch to painting with white).

Also, consider creating a new display (View->New View) and using the Contrast Display Filter to enhance the edges of your render.

In addition to what Saul says above:

Recently, Rod submitted a post about some pdf files that contained some interesting GIMP tutorials.

See viewtopic.php?f=10&t=253&start=0&hilit=lxf_gimp_tutorials#p2068

Particularly, LXF 111. (I've attached this pdf below)
