Gimp question???

GIMP Version: 2.6
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

I am still using gimp 2.6. Should i upgrade to the new gimp? i mainly use my gimp to paint with. Am i missing out by not upgrading to the new gimp? Will i lose all my brushes if do the upgrade? If i know how to use gimp 2.6 will i be able to use gimp 2.8? Thanks. I am having so much fun painting with gimp. I don't want to mess up with my hobby by upgrading. Hope someone who paints with gimp can help me out.

I have several different gimps...I just keep them in separate folders. I think you can always point to the brushes from one gimp to the other in preferences.

I upgraded to 2.8.6 and I still have all my original brushes. I don't think you will lose the brushes you have.

you can always backup your Gimp user folder

is 2.8 that much different than gimp 2.6?

Personally, I find 2.8s new brush engine an extreme hindrance but you might not. My advice is to try a portable version first to see how you get on. I've stuck with 2.6 for a number of reasons, in particular, how slow 2.8 is when using a graphics tablet.
