helloi am a complete beginner and have only used gimp for a few days.
i have two photos of DVD cover but they are separate in two files. I want to
merge them into one. one on the left and one on the right. However, I
want them to be ''connected'' perfectly, but it looks like so hard and time consuming
to make it perfect using a hand and a mouse. Any faster way Thanks

what do you mean connected perfectly ?

make sure both image have the same height (if they are different, use the smaller one and scale down the bigger)

open one and then open the second as layer
go to 'Image' and change the canvas size
with the 'Move Tool' make them align (perhaps use the zoom function for help), so that both can be seen

Align them perfectly, look professional. How to use Move Tool? Any 'more professional' way to align them together? I don't want to use Zoom Tool, it is time-wasting and requires a lot of mouse skills instead of making use of the powerfulness of technology. More importantly, I have a lot of such images to align i dont want to waste the time and effort to use zoom. Thanks

Hi kenny1999,

Welcome to Gimp Chat.
It would pay to do some simple Gimp tutorials to get familiar with some of the more common Gimp tools (see our Tutorial section) before diving in at the deep end.
http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3315

What you are asking sounds simple enough, but it would help us to help you if you posted your images so we can determine what issues you might encounter eg: their sizes etc.
Use the upload button Image

Esper's instructions are correct but probably lack the detail level you require based on your current knowledge of Gimp.

Edit: Since posting, I see you have edited your post to say you have many to do... then if under the Image menu in Gimp you don't see the Option 'Arrange Layers', then you might like to add this python script which may do what you need.
You will need to unzip and copy it to your plugins folder and then restart Gimp.

Failing that I suggest you pull out your magic wand ;)

CSS WebSprites script should help you. Don't let the name throw you off it will do exactly what you want. All you need to do is load your 2 DVD covers as layer in Gimp and run WebSprites | Arrange layers horizontally or vertically. Merge the layers and your done.

seriously, dont mix sentences like: i dont know where the move tool is, zooming is a waste of time, with "professional"

Saulgoode just created a script that takes more than one layer and aligns them on their own re sized canvas. That may help.

None of the scripts suggested so far will actually Scale the layers to the same dimensions they all Resize the smaller layer to the canvas size of the larger, which is not what the Query Asked
as I think the question as it was asked is referring to a one of instance. Maybe these steps will help

1/ open both Images in Gimp [take note of the dimensions of the smaller]
2/ Scale the larger Image down to the dimensions of the smaller
3/ change canvas size to widthx2, leave height as is
4/ open your other Image and copy visible
5/ go back to your scaled layer and paste as new layer
6/ select your alignment tool :alntool ,click on your pasted layer and then in your tool options select :alnright
7/ Merge visible layers and your done
